Justice Paige Petersen was appointed to the Utah Supreme Court in December 2017 by Governor Gary Herbert. In addition to her duties as a justice on the court, she sits on the Utah Judicial Council, which is the policy-making body for the Utah judiciary. Justice Petersen is committed to elevating lawyer well-being in Utah’s legal community. She spearheaded a task force to study the issue, which made recommendations that she now helps to implement as the co-chair of the Well-Being Committee for the Legal Profession. Before joining the Supreme Court, Justice Petersen was a district court judge in the Third Judicial District, where she handled civil and criminal matters, and the Summit County Drug Court. Justice Petersen grew up in Castle Dale and Price, Utah. She obtained an associates degree from the College of Eastern Utah in Price, and then went on to graduate summa cum laude from the University of Utah and earn a law degree from Yale Law School. After graduation, she clerked for two years in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Ohio, and then joined the law firm of Simpson Thacher & Bartlett in New York City as a litigation associate. She then transitioned to criminal law, serving as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of New York in Brooklyn. There, she handled cases involving organized crime and international narcotics trafficking. The Salt Lake Tribune reports that Justice Paige Petersen was sworn in Friday to fill a vacancy created by the retirement of Christine Durnam, the state high court's first female justice. Petersen was a state District Court judge when Gov. Gary Herbert appointed her in October. The Utah Senate confirmed the appointment in November. Durham announced her retirement in May 2017, after 35 years on the court.
