Anselmo "Chemo" Valdez: A Lifetime of Dedication to Las Vegas, New Mexico

The community of Las Vegas, New Mexico, mourns the loss of Anselmo "Chemo" Valdez, a cherished businessman and dedicated supporter, who passed away peacefully at the age of 89 on August 6, 2024, surrounded by family at his Las Vegas home, ready to be reunited with his dear wife, Lina. Born on August 10, 1934, in Chacon, New Mexico, Anselmo grew up in a large, loving family that included two older stepbrothers, two older stepsisters, and five brothers and two sisters from Max and Lucy Valdez.

From his earliest years, Anselmo demonstrated an unwavering work ethic, spending summers tending sheep in Chacon and engaging in various entrepreneurial ventures to support his family. This tenacity became a hallmark of his character, paving the way for a remarkable journey of dedication to his community and a legacy that resonates through generations.

At the age of 12, Anselmo and the Valdez family relocated to Las Vegas, New Mexico, in pursuit of new opportunities. Anselmo seamlessly integrated into the community, selling newspapers and shining shoes, using his earnings to indulge in a movie at the historic Coronado Theatre—a building he would later come to own, adjacent to Gambles. During his teenage years, he found employment at a local butcher shop owned by Art Ortiz, where he honed his skills until his graduation from Las Vegas High School in 1952.

A few months after graduating, nine boys from the class of 1952, including Anselmo, enlisted in the United States Navy. They arrived at a San Diego Naval base for 13 weeks of boot camp, playing roles in the Korean Conflict from bases around the world—all of them surviving. While in the Navy, Anselmo worked on the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge in Japan.

Anselmo's life took a pivotal turn when he married his high school sweetheart, Adelina "Lina" Torres, on June 3, 1953, while on leave from the Navy. Together, they built a beautiful family of six children: Valerie and husband Dr. Ronald Monteverde, Rosemarie Valdez, Joseph and wife Sonia Valdez, Victor and wife JoAnn Valdez, Maxine and husband James Ortiz, and Maria Elena Valdez (Jonelle). In 1956, Anselmo embarked on a career in the retail industry, joining Gambles as the credit manager. For over six decades, he dedicated himself to serving the community from the same store, eventually assuming ownership on June 17, 1983. Despite his remarkable tenure, Anselmo remained steadfast, working seven hours daily at the age of 89—a testament to his enduring dedication and work ethic. Valdez became manager of Gamble’s in the 1960s and was awarded store manager of the year—a national recognition—in 1978.

Anselmo's impact transcended local recognition, earning accolades on regional and national platforms. He maintained a close relationship with his customers, considering them family. His motto was, “If we don’t have it, we can find it for you,” reflecting his commitment to customer service. His induction into the Marquis Who's Who Biographical Registry in 2023 further solidified his stature as a distinguished leader.

Anselmo's commitment to Las Vegas, New Mexico, extended beyond his professional endeavors. He served as the president of the Chamber of Commerce in Las Vegas for several years, championing initiatives to promote local businesses and economic growth. He served on the board of directors for the Bank of Las Vegas, now Southwest Community Bank. His passion for his community was evident in his involvement in significant events and celebrations. He was present to welcome Prince Charles to Las Vegas during the dedication of the United World College in 1982, alongside his wife Lina and daughter Maria Elena. Additionally, Anselmo played a vital role in organizing the Fourth of July Fiestas, a cherished tradition in Las Vegas, NM, serving as a member of the fiesta committee. He was at one point the president of the committee for the Fiestas de Las Vegas, bringing in all the entertainment. Anselmo was also a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church and the Woodworkers Guild of America.

Anselmo's leadership and service to community and country have been carried forward within the achievements of his children and grandchildren. Three of his grandsons, Aaron, Joseph Jr., and Joshua, followed in his footsteps to serve their country as officers in the military and police force. Aaron graduated from the police academy in 2005 and has now recently retired as a captain in the Santa Fe police department, assigned to the Criminal Investigations Section. Joseph graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 2010, becoming a fighter pilot in the USAF and now also flying for United Airlines. Joshua, his youngest grandchild, graduated from the United States Naval Academy in 2023 as a Surface Warfare Officer Meteorologist and currently serves on the USS Abraham Lincoln.

An exemplary display of Anselmo's deep-rooted patriotism was his unwavering commitment to honoring Bataan Death March veterans and their families. For nearly 30 years, Anselmo stood as a beacon of respect, adorning the Vietnam Veteran's Park in Las Vegas, New Mexico, with 14 United States flags—a poignant representation of the local Bataan veterans. These flags, meticulously presented on significant holidays like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and the Fourth of July, serve as a solemn tribute to those who sacrificed so much for their country.

Anselmo's dedication to this tradition has been a family affair, with many of his children, grandchildren, neighbor and friend Charlie, and many family members embracing the ritual wholeheartedly --rising as early as 5:30 am to assist in this tradition. This shared devotion to this tradition has not only strengthened the bond within the family, but also instilled a profound sense of patriotism and respect for their community's heroes.

In a testament to the enduring legacy of this tradition, Anselmo has entrusted his son Victor with the honor of carrying forward the tradition of honoring the Bataan veterans through the display of these symbolic flags. It stands as a poignant reminder of Anselmo's enduring commitment to his community, his country, and the values of honor and remembrance that define his character.
